When a young adult turns 18, there are a number of legal changes to prepare for. For youth with intellectual disabilities, there are special topics to be aware of such as a Special Needs Trust and SSI eligibility.
This video covers the topics you need to know about and resources for getting started on items like SSI eligibility, Guardianship, Wills and setting up Special Needs Trust. It also contains information on the Selective Service and Voter Registration.

A great way for parents of children with disabilities to receive information and support is through a parent support group. Support groups help to create a sense of community and understanding with other parents. They can provide a space to discuss problems and share ideas and help. Review the suggested resources for locating a support group online or in your community.
